Frequently Asked Questions
General
What is the MT Base Linux Image? It is the one operating platform MultiTaction supports on current Hydra appliances (H2, H4, H8, H12, H16). It contains the operating system, hardware drivers, a minimal configuration environment, and remote-support enrollment — but no MultiTaction applications. Products like Canvus, Showcase, and Launcher are installed afterward as Approved Packages.
Why is there only one image now, instead of Full and Slim variants? A single image means platform behaviour cannot diverge between application bundles. Every appliance starts from the same tested foundation; what differs between deployments is which Approved Packages are installed on top of it, not which base image was used.
Which hardware does it support? The current Hydra Appliance tier: H2, H4, H8, H12, and H16. Older or end-of-life Hydra hardware is assessed and supported separately.
Is this ready for production deployment? Check the download page before relying on any specific build. Builds marked as an engineering preview use a development signing key and have not completed hardware qualification — they are not for customer deployments.
Installation
Do I need a network connection to install? No. The Installer USB is self-contained and installs offline. A network connection is only needed afterward, to install Approved Packages and enable remote support.
What's the difference between Factory Reset and Repair Installation? Factory Reset erases the operating system and all Application Data — it is the deliberate clean-slate option. Repair Installation replaces only the operating system while preserving Application Data, and is offered only when the installer recognises an existing MultiTaction disk layout. See Installation for the full procedure.
Will Repair Installation reinstall my applications automatically? No. It preserves your Application Data but leaves reinstalling MultiTaction applications to a technician, deliberately — so recovery does not pull an unexpected version or require network access to succeed.
What happens if I pick the wrong disk? The installer requires you to explicitly confirm the target disk, shown with its model, capacity, and serial number, before any destructive action. Nothing is erased without that confirmation.
Can I install this on a laptop or generic PC? No. It is built and qualified for the current Hydra Appliance hardware tier only.
Applications and updates
How do I install Canvus, Showcase, or Launcher? Through MultiTaction → Install Apps in the desktop menu, once the appliance is installed and on a network. These are Approved Packages installed after the base platform, not part of the image itself.
Will my appliance silently move to a newer product version? No. Products are approved by name, and Update Software offers the current signed release of something already installed — but nothing installs or upgrades itself without that step, and the kernel/driver pair and MultiTaction applications never update automatically.
Does the appliance reboot itself to apply updates? No. Operational reboots are never automatic, so a live wall display is never interrupted without an operator choosing to restart it.
Security and access
Who has the administrator password? You do. MultiTaction does not hold or distribute a shared administrator credential for customer appliances.
How does MultiTaction remote support work? Through Teleport, with individually authenticated, role-based, and audited access — there is no shared password for remote access. See the Security Information Report for details.
Can I turn off remote support? Yes, with a local control on the appliance. Doing so removes MultiTaction's ability to reach that appliance remotely; on-site or customer-remote access becomes the only path.
Does the appliance send data back to MultiTaction? Only the crash reporting already built into each installed application. There is no additional operating-system telemetry. Support diagnostics are produced only on request, as a sanitised bundle that excludes customer content and credentials.
Is disk encryption available? Yes, as an optional deployment choice. It is not enabled by default.
Networking
Why does the appliance have two network roles? To keep customer-network traffic separate from wall/touch-device traffic. Neither is routed to the other until a technician explicitly configures it, so connecting both at once does not by itself bridge your networks.
Can I use Wi-Fi for everything? Wi-Fi is supported for the Uplink (customer network, internet, Teleport). The Wall Network — touch and wall-device traffic — requires a wired Ethernet connection.
Support
Something isn't working — what do I send MultiTaction? Use Diagnostics in the MultiTaction menu to export a sanitised support bundle, and include it with your support request. It is safe to send as-is — it excludes secrets, credentials, and customer content by design.
Where do I report a security concern? Through your normal MultiTaction support channel. See Reporting a security concern for what to include and what to leave out of the initial message.
